PETALING JAYA – Malaysia’s Cabinet has endorsed a proposal to cap the Prime Minister’s tenure at 10 years, advancing the Madani government’s agenda for institutional reforms, announced Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
The decision came during the weekly Cabinet meeting on January 30, following extensive reviews of policy inputs, public feedback, and stakeholder recommendations. Azalina emphasized that the measure seeks to prevent power concentration, bolster democratic checks and balances, and build public trust in leadership, mirroring practices in mature democracies worldwide.
Amendments to the Federal Constitution are set to be tabled in Parliament during its current 2026 session. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently confirmed plans for a bill limiting the role to no more than 10 years or two full terms, signaling a commitment to stronger governance accountability.
