Pyongyang’s ambassador to Russia told the Tass news agency that North Korea plans to strengthen cooperation with Russia to counter the US. Peace on the Korean peninsula will not be feasible until American forces are evacuated.
Ambassador Sin Hong remarks came after senior North Korean leaders warned this week that continuing with annual joint military drills will have repercussions for South Korea and the United States.
The drills are a “war rehearsal” that prove the US is to blame for the current state of affairs, says Ambassador Sin Hong.
We will also strengthen collaboration between North Korea and Russia to resist the United States, which is a mutual threat,” Mr Sin said.
As a result of the 1950 – 1953 Korean War, which left the peninsula in a technical state of war when fighting concluded with an armistice rather than a peace accord, some 28,500 American troops are stationed in South Korea. The joint drills, according to Washington and Seoul, are defensive.
