APJ Abdul Kalam, the most inspirational former president of India passed away on 27 July, 2015. He passed away because of cardiac arrest. He played the most important role in the development of missiles. He inspired everyone to achieve their goals and fulfil their dreams.
He helped to establish India as a nuclear power. To avoid the threat of sanction from the western powers, Indira Gandhi conducted the Pokhran-I tests which was codenamed ‘SmilingBuddha’. Things took a drastic change in the 1980s when Pakistan covertly started to develop its own nuclear program.  A Beginning of a new era was witnessed after Atal Bihari Vajpayee came into power and then DAE Chief R Chidambaram and DRDO Chief Abdul Kalam were given heads up for the nuclear tests to be conducted in extreme secrecy.
After CIAs intervention in 1995, India approved nuclear tests were aborted. Thus India was left with no option but to take its next step in utmost secrecy. So, with the help of the then Chief Scientific Adviser, Abdul Kalam, Pokhran-II was planned among a small group of scientists which even excluded senior government officials.
As the desert provided no cover for such a large-scale operation, artificial sand dunes were created, and Dr Abdul Kalam took Major General  Prithiviraj’s name. The thermonuclear device was placed in a shaft code named ‘White House’ and all other testing material was condemned and transported in Army trucks.
DRDO officials attentively checked out the timings of the US satellite positions over India. They worked only during the night when there were low chances of detection. Even the scientists wore Army uniforms under the radar.
Christened as ‘Operation Shakti’, a series of 5 nuclear explosions were carried out between May 11 and May 13, days after India claimed that it had no intentions of testing nuclear devices. Finally after two decades, Pokhran-II tests were successfully conducted under the Missile man of India- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
India then made its entry into the ‘Big 5’ states after these tests and was declared one of the nuclear weapon states under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty who were also the five permanent members of the Security Council of United Nations.
His vision is supremely inspirational and he continues to live in the hearts. He is famous globally for his intelligence and his adaptation and reaction to failure. If he failed, he worked even harder. He spread the message of achieving dreams by persistent and consistent efforts.
