Born and raised in Malaysia, Suriani Kempe has emerged as one of the country’s most formidable champions of gender equality, human rights, and social justice. Her upbringing in a culturally rich yet socially complex environment fueled her passion for advocating change from an early age. With a degree in Southeast Asian Studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Suriani gained a deep understanding of regional socio-political dynamics. This academic foundation shaped her lifelong commitment to empowering marginalized communities.
Suriani’s professional journey began in 2008 with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Malaysia. There, she played a key role in establishing the country’s first state-funded job placement unit for persons with disabilities in Johor. This pioneering initiative showcased her dedication to inclusion and social equity. Over the years, she has held influential positions, including Programme Manager at Musawah, a global movement advocating for equality and justice in Muslim family laws, as well as advisory roles within the Malaysian Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development. In these capacities, she worked to shape policies affecting women and vulnerable groups across the nation.
One of Suriani’s most impactful contributions came in 2018 when she co-founded Family Frontiers, a non-governmental organization advocating for equal citizenship rights for Malaysian mothers married to foreign nationals. At the time, Malaysian law denied mothers the right to confer citizenship to their children, a right automatically granted to fathers. Suriani’s tireless advocacy led to a landmark High Court ruling in 2021 that affirmed this right for Malaysian mothers. Although the ruling was later overturned by the Court of Appeal, her efforts sparked a nationwide conversation and strengthened a growing movement for legal reform.
In addition to her work with Family Frontiers, Suriani co-founded Queer Lapis, a platform dedicated to promoting the rights and visibility of Malaysia’s LGBTQ+ community. She also established Kemban Kolektif, a feminist consulting collective aimed at advancing human rights and gender equality. Her leadership and activism have gained international recognition. In 2023, she received the prestigious Hän Honour from Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was appointed to several influential boards, including the International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific.
