President give awards to Singapore employers for their dedication to skills development

At Animal and Avian Veterinary Clinic, Singapore, the staff is authorized to strive at different roles and responsibilities rotate through distinct departments such as hospitalisation wards, surgery and administration. It is interesting that every staff member receives $600 as training allowance every year to learn new skills and there are no conditions attached to it. According to the founder and head vet at the clinic, Dr Kenneth Tong, all skills whether related or not can be used at the workplace. For example an employee wants to learn web designing, he can use the skills to design or redesign the clinic’s website. Skills never get wasted.
On January 20, 2021- 22 employers received awards for their commitment to skill development and skills mastery. One of 22 employers was the Animal and Avian Veterinary Clinic. The SkillsFuture Fellowship and Employer Awards ceremony was held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre. The ceremony was attended by President Halimah Yacob and Education Minister Lawrence Wong. The President handed out the awards to the employers.
It was noted in a speech by Mr Wong that the coronavirus pandemic has caused people to make changes in the way they work and live. Because of the increasing changes in consumer behaviour and patterns, companies have to rethink their business models. Companies also had to digitize their work because of the situation. In the similar ways, employees had to keep up with the changes and had to learn new skills or update their existing skills. To stay in the competition, companies and employees have to stay updated with the new technology and skills.
For example due to coronavirus, the clinic made consultations via online platforms like zoom and google meet. Their employees updated their skills on stress management, how to cope up with the COVID-19, lifestyle management and healthy eating. All skills learnt help an employee to manage the clients as well as any crisis that may happen. Learning new skills will also help employees to easily get a job somewhere else in case they decide to leave.
