PKR: Election Nomination Delay Unrelated to Rafizi’s Leave, Says Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR — PKR’s central election committee chair Dr Zaliha Mustafa has denied any link between the party’s decision to postpone its central leadership council nominations and Deputy President Rafizi Ramli’s recent leave from ministerial duties.

Speaking at a press conference, Zaliha said the postponement was due to technical and procedural requirements following recent constitutional amendments, not political considerations.

“There are new requirements, such as updating the delegates list based on vote percentages for the youth and women’s wings. More time is needed to complete these preparations,” she explained, adding that the party is working closely with the secretary-general’s office.

Her remarks follow speculation about the reasons for the delay, especially after PKR announced that the nomination dates had been shifted from May 3–4 to May 8–9, without providing detailed reasons. Prime Minister and PKR President Anwar Ibrahim had earlier dismissed concerns over Rafizi’s leave, calling it a “non-issue” and joking he too needed a break.

Meanwhile, PKR’s internal elections have faced scrutiny after allegations of irregularities in the divisional polls involving a blockchain-based voting system. The party has appointed independent auditors, who are currently reviewing the process after complaints and reruns in four divisions.

Several senior party leaders — including ministers and MPs aligned with Rafizi — lost in the divisional contests. Zaliha confirmed that the auditors had received all requested materials and said a report is expected soon.
