PIDBR 2025 Sets New Records at Straits Quay

PENANG, MALAYSIA — The Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta (PIDBR) 2025 proudly made a vibrant return to Straits Quay Retail Marina from 28 to 30 November, hosted once again by Eastern & Oriental Berhad (E&O), Malaysia’s renowned developer celebrated for iconic waterfront craftsmanship. Marking its second consecutive year at this lively seafront destination, the regatta revived Penang’s longstanding maritime heritage and positioned the island as a premier global sporting and cultural hub.

Rooted in one of Asia’s most historic paddling traditions, PIDBR 2025 surpassed all expectations with participation exceeding last year’s impressive figures. The event welcomed over 1,600 athletes from 12 countries in 2024; this year, the introduction of a dedicated para-athlete category brought three competing teams, further diversifying and expanding the scope of competition. Spectator numbers swelled beyond the previous 100,000, highlighting Penang’s increasing appeal to an international crowd.

The regatta’s dynamic itinerary featured thrilling 250-meter and 400-meter races along with inclusive events spotlighting para-athletes, junior and senior divisions, and international open categories. The rhythmic beating of drums combined with the rapid strokes of paddles created an electrifying atmosphere that celebrated sportsmanship, global unity, and cultural exchange.

“The spirit of dragon boating, which embodies teamwork, discipline, and unity, resonates with the values guiding Penang’s future development,” stated Dato’ Seri Tee Eng Ho, Executive Chairman of Eastern & Oriental Berhad. “As Straits Quay and Andaman Island flourish together, we are proud to support a festival that energizes our waterfront and elevates Penang’s stature as a destination for sport, culture, and community engagement.”

The success of PIDBR 2025 underscores Penang’s growing influence on the international sporting stage while maintaining deep ties to its rich maritime legacy, ensuring the island remains a vibrant centre for athletic excellence and cultural celebration.
