Negeri Sembilan Bans Public Alcohol Consumption, Citing Public Safety and Cleanliness

NEGERI SEMBILAN — The state government of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia has officially approved a ban on alcohol consumption in public spaces, a move that has received widespread support from residents concerned about safety and public order.

Announcing the decision at a recent press conference, Chief Minister Dato’ Seri Aminuddin Harun explained that prior to this policy, enforcement agencies could only issue verbal warnings to individuals caught drinking in public. With the new regulation in place, authorities, including the police, now have the power to issue fines to violators.

The ban targets individuals who consume alcohol in areas such as parks, recreational zones, and public fields. According to state officials, numerous incidents linked to public drinking have raised concerns over vandalism, broken glass hazards, and a general sense of unease among families and children in these locations.

Residents have expressed their support for the measure, citing the need for cleaner and safer communal environments. Authorities said the move is expected to curb anti-social behavior and promote responsible alcohol use.

“The enforcement of this law allows us to maintain public order more effectively,” said the Chief Minister, adding that it aligns with community expectations and public health goals.

Local enforcement agencies have begun preparations to monitor high-risk zones and ensure compliance as the ban takes effect. The government has also urged the public to report violations to support collective efforts in maintaining a respectful and safe environment.
