MP Muhyiddin Yassin appoints Umno Ismail Sabri as Deputy PM

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has named Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Deputy Prime Minister, ahead of a party gathering to review the party’s support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration.
According to a statement released by his office on Wednesday, the appointment would assist the Prime Minister in managing the nation and fulfilling the needs of the people under the present health and economic crises (July 7). Datuk Seri Ismail, Umno’s most senior Cabinet member, would keep his current position as Defence Minister.
Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, another Umno politician, is currently Senior Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mr. Ismail’s security cluster responsibility, which deals with the Covid-19 pandemic, would be transferred to him. Both nominations have been informed to the King and will take effect immediately, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Mr. Hishammuddin stated that he would do his utmost to fulfill the new job.
“I think that we can only emerge out of this crisis together if we have stability, unity, and close collaboration from all parties,” he said on Facebook.
“Whatever role is handed to me, my attitude is unchanged: to honestly serve the people and the country,” he added. The appointments come ahead of Umno’s supreme council meeting, the party’s highest decision-making body, set for this evening to debate pulling support from the government.
Political experts perceive the elevation of the two senior Umno members as an effort to sway the debates.
