Malaysian Pharmacist Allegedly Murdered in Melbourne by Suspected Schizophrenic, Australian Media Reports

KUALA LUMPUR — A 29-year-old Malaysian pharmacist, Mr. Leong Kum Chuan, working in Melbourne, Australia, was allegedly murdered in his home on October 23 by a 54-year-old homeless man believed to be suffering from schizophrenia, according to Australian media.

Mr. Leong, who worked for Eastern Health since 2021, was found by a concerned colleague after he failed to arrive for work. The suspect, identified as Simon Hunter, has been detained and charged in connection with Mr. Leong’s death.

During a court appearance via video from the Heidelberg police station, Hunter exhibited erratic behavior, even removing his clothing at one point. His lawyer, Ms. Georgia Karvela, informed the court that Hunter had schizophrenia and had not taken his medication for two weeks.

Eastern Health’s CEO, Mr. David Plunkett, expressed sorrow, describing Mr. Leong as a passionate and dedicated colleague known for his kindness and mentorship. “KC was just 29 years old, and this tragedy will be felt by many,” Mr. Plunkett said, asking for privacy for Mr. Leong’s family and friends.

Mr. Leong’s family arrived in Melbourne from Malaysia but did not attend the court proceedings. The case is scheduled for a follow-up hearing on January 16, 2025.
