Malaysian climber dies on Nepal’s Mera Peak

A 33-year-old Malaysian climber trying to summit Nepal’s Mera Peak lost his life on Thursday, Malaysian media revealed. News of Mr Hazlami Ahmad Nizam’s death reached the Malaysian Diplomatic Mission in Nepal at 11am on Thursday, the agency revealed in a statement, also saying that a fuller report from the Nepalese authorities is anticipated.

Mr Hazlami was a passionate climber, having in past months trekked at the Everest Base Camp in Nepal and Mount Xueshan in Taiwan. Things have been arranged for his body to be brought down the hill by helicopter on Friday, his family has been conveyed. Several of Mr Hazlami’s family members will be going to Nepal to help in bringing him back to Malaysia, Berita Harian reported.

The Malaysian’s demise was encountered and interconnected with many tributes and condolence messages on social media, involving one from the alumni association of Universiti Teknologi Petronas, where Mr Hazlami graduated from in 2013. According to a friend, he was an employee of Petronas Chemicals in Kuantan, Pahang.

He has three children, which includes a daughter who was just one year old. The 6,476m Mera Peak is one of 18 summits in the Himalayas that is well known with climbers, specifically in the autumn months from September to November, with average daytime temperatures of 12 deg C. In November 2021, a British climber lost his life after missing his step at a mountain camp while going to Mera.
