Malaysia Fixes RON95 Petrol Price at RM1.99 for Citizens Starting Sept 30

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will set the price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 (S$0.60) per litre for citizens beginning Sept 30, according to Bernama. The move, aimed at easing living costs, is expected to benefit over 16 million Malaysians.

Mr Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said that all Malaysians with a valid driving licence will be eligible for the subsidy. Foreigners, however, will be required to purchase RON95 at the unsubsidised price of approximately RM2.60 per litre.

Special groups will receive early access to the subsidy. Police and Armed Forces personnel will enjoy the RM1.99 price from Sept 27, while Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) recipients will be eligible starting Sept 28.

“This targeted subsidy is for every Malaysian regardless of income level, as a gesture of appreciation to the rakyat,” Mr Anwar said.

To prevent excessive consumption, the government has set a monthly limit of 300 litres of subsidised RON95 per eligible individual. However, e-hailing drivers and riders will be allowed to apply for a higher ceiling due to their work requirements.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan had previously confirmed that the scheme would be rolled out at the end of September. Meanwhile, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali stated that subsidy access will not depend on a single payment method.

“Eligibility will be tied to the MyKad, but purchases won’t rely solely on it,” he said on Sept 21.

The targeted RON95 subsidy marks a major step in the government’s efforts to balance fiscal responsibility with public support, ensuring affordable fuel access while limiting leakages to non-citizens.
