Kazakhstan to hold referendum on nuclear plant construction – president

Kazakhstan will conduct a referendum to decide whether to create its fresh nuclear power plant, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev conveyed on Friday, also they said that the date would be chosen after sometime. The Central Asian nation’s government has brainstormed a lot on the notion, understanding the requirement for fresh power generation capacity, and even discovered a planned area for the facility in the southeastern Almary region and mentioned Russia’s Rosatom as a possible partner.

But some activists go against the activity due to security problems and Kazakhstan’s history as home to the Soviet-operated Semei nuclear weapons testing ground. “One one side , Kazakhstan, as the world’s hugest uranium creator, should hold its personal nuclear power capacity,” Tokayev said. “On the other hand, several citizens and some experts have problems about the security of nuclear power plants.”
