In a significant development, the University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) business school has taken a bold step by reporting suspected fraudulent student admissions to the police. This move follows an internal investigation conducted by the institution, prompting a stern warning against illegal entry methods for prospective students.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the report to the police was made after the HKU business school uncovered suspicious cases involving the submission of fraudulent documents during the admission process. Although the school refrained from providing detailed information, the seriousness of the matter is underscored by its decision to involve law enforcement.
The investigation was triggered by a post on the Hong Kong-based forum website, LIHKG, where an individual claimed to be on the verge of graduating from the university. Allegations surfaced regarding the use of fabricated academic transcripts facilitated by an agency to secure admission offers from HKU.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, HKU announced on May 21 that it had identified “a small number” of students who had submitted fake documents in their applications. The university reiterated its commitment to upholding academic integrity, vowing to revoke admissions and cancel registrations for students found guilty of misconduct.
In a stern warning, HKU emphasized the legal repercussions of falsifying documents, urging students and parents to refrain from engaging in unlawful activities to gain entry into esteemed academic institutions. Furthermore, the university condemned agencies offering “guaranteed admissions” and profiting from the fabrication of application materials, signaling a firm stance against such unethical practices.
