The specter of Israeli retaliation loomed large over the talks, following missile and drone attacks attributed to Iran. As the G7 nations grappled with the fallout from the recent hostilities between Israel and Iran, the conflict in Gaza and the crisis in Ukraine also loomed large on the agenda.
Italy, holding the G7’s rotating presidency, emphasized the imperative of pursuing peace amid heightened international tensions. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani underscored the G7’s commitment to fostering stability in the face of mounting threats, stating, “Against a background of strong international tensions, the Italian-led G7 is tasked with working for peace.”
In response to the recent escalation, the United States announced plans to impose new sanctions on Iran’s missile and drone program, with expectations for allied support. However, the efficacy and scope of these sanctions remained subjects of deliberation, with considerations ranging from targeted measures against individuals to broader economic sanctions.
Amidst the focus on the Middle East, the G7 also addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joining the discussions. Concerns over Russia’s relentless air strikes on Ukraine’s energy network prompted discussions on bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses and leveraging sovereign Russian assets to support Ukraine’s resilience.
The agenda of the G7 meeting extended beyond geopolitical flashpoints, encompassing broader issues such as infrastructure connectivity, cybersecurity, and combating disinformation.
