Freeland Set to Exit Cabinet, Poised for Ukraine Envoy Role

OTTAWA – Canadian Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to step down from cabinet to assume a new position as a special international envoy for Ukraine, according to a source familiar with the development. The source, who requested anonymity, said Freeland will continue as a legislator for now. The Globe and Mail first reported the news on Tuesday.

Freeland, 57, is of Ukrainian descent and fluent in the language, a background that has shaped her prominent role in steering Canada’s tough stance against Russia. While her office did not respond to requests for comment, she declined to speak when approached by reporters.

A veteran minister since the Liberals came to power in 2015, Freeland’s political journey has been turbulent in recent years. After losing to Mark Carney in the Liberal leadership race in March, she remained in government under his leadership during the April election.

Her resignation as finance minister in December 2024 sparked political unrest within the party and ultimately contributed to Justin Trudeau’s decision to step down as prime minister. Freeland’s anticipated envoy role underscores Ottawa’s continued commitment to Ukraine as the conflict with Russia grinds on.
