I was very recently presented the opportunity of visiting a State that promoted it’s tourism with a tag line that read- Simply heaven. Uttarakhand beckoned me in the form of a few workshops on education and I was absolutely excited by the thought of visiting a state that is also known as Dev Bhoomi or, the land of the Gods.
I was on a mission to work with people on a topic that took them closer to happiness, better relationships, improve their social skills and which would also help them towards having more successful careers. I was there to conduct workshops on Emotional Intelligence, a subject that easily is more than the need of the hour. Though I could not visit any of the hundreds of amazing places in Uttarakhand to discover heaven, I certainly did get to meet several wonderful people who had positive innate qualities that displayed kindness, warmth, empathy and care. Their simplicity made me realize what I was missing living in concrete jungles and, where I had spent my entire life, right from the time of my birth.
Rudrapur, a small city with just a population of about one hundred and fifty thousand people, was where I addressed a little more than two hundred teachers from several schools in and around the city. The workshop even had participants from as far away as Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshops were extremely interactive, well received and were a resounding success, both in terms of the learning for the participants and for me in the role of a teacher as well and with invitations pouring in for more such workshops.
From my experience and the love, the respect and the warmth with which people greeted me, I would say that even though Rudrapur is a very small city compared to where I currently stay, it is a city filled with people with big hearts. The wonderful people I met in my four day journey in Rudrapur, the success of the workshops and the few beautiful friendships that I made in such a short time, has all got me excited like a small child, wanting to go back soon for more. I was also lucky enough to go on air for a community FM Radio Channel. And yes, working on Emotional Intelligence becomes even more worthwhile when you already have an audience filled with people with warm and big hearts.
After all, as Aristotle once said – Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.
