Kasar Devi is one of the best tourist attractions of Almora. It is a small village which is famously known for the temple Kasar Devi. Because it is a part of the hippie trail, tourists are attracted to this place. The historical temple was built in the 2nd century CE. It is devoted to Goddess Kasar Devi. The location of the temple is in the Kaashay Hills on the cliff of a ridge. This place is a must visit for anyone who is visiting or travelling to Almora.The temple is also related to the Indian Freedom Movement. Swami Vivekananda once mediated nearby the temple. Kasar Devi Fair is a local fair which is organized by villagers every year on Kartik Poornima. During this fair, the village is beautifully decorated and the temple looks magnificent in gleaming colorful lights. The fair is usually held in the month of October or November.
Pine and fir trees surround the Kasar Devi village. Just walking through this village can make you feel peaceful. The view if majestic himlayan mountains from the temple is profound and serene. The main temple has akhand jyoti which is an oil lamp which burns for 24 hours daily. Devi’s main shrine is inside a cave. You can reach there by using a taxi or cab but if you track or hike to that place, your experience would be magical. A small temple inside this main temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is also a havan kund where wood logs are burnt for 24 hours. The ash which is left after the burning is said to be used to cure various mental ailments. The hilltop is also an attraction for tourists as they can capture the serene valley and snowy mountains from there.
