Anwar Ibrahim to Retain PKR Presidency Unopposed as Party Gears Up for 2025 Elections

PETALING JAYA – Anwar Ibrahim is set to remain as president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) for the 2025–2028 term, as no challengers have come forward for the top post, according to the party’s central election committee chairperson, Dr Zaliha Mustafa. With nominations for other leadership positions closed, a total of 251 candidates are vying for roles across various party wings.

Dr Zaliha also confirmed that the current PKR Youth Chief, Adam Adli, will retain his position unopposed. The upcoming party polls, scheduled for May 23, will see 104 candidates contesting for seats in the central leadership committee, 85 for the youth wing, and 62 for the Wanita PKR committee. She described the high level of participation as a reflection of the party’s commitment to internal democracy and its role as a platform for fresh leadership.

The objection period for nominations will be held on May 11 and 12, with appeals to follow on May 13 and 14. The final list of candidates will be confirmed on May 15, and official campaigning will run from then until May 22. Meanwhile, incumbent deputy president Rafizi Ramli is expected to face a strong challenge from Nurul Izzah Anwar, though calls for Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to enter the race have gone unanswered, with Saifuddin confirming he will not contest any positions. In a separate development, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun has announced he will defend his vice-president post, further solidifying his presence in the party’s leadership structure.
