PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s delegation of officials, coaches, and athletes from seven sports safely returned home on December 10 after withdrawing from the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand due to serious safety concerns. Although the Cambodian athletes had not competed in any events, they fulfilled their ASEAN obligations by attending official meetings, the flag-raising, and opening ceremonies.
Mr. Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of Cambodia’s National Olympic Committee, said the withdrawal was driven by concerns raised by the athletes’ families, emphasizing the priority of athlete safety. The delegation was originally set to compete in 12 sports, but only seven teams traveled to Thailand.
Cambodian chef de mission Nhan Sokvisal described the mission as short but meaningful, reassuring the public that all returning members were safe. Gymnastics head Noy Phana confirmed the delegation’s safe arrival on December 10 evening. The move highlights the importance Cambodia places on athlete well-being while maintaining its diplomatic commitments within Southeast Asia’s regional sports community.
