U.S. Envoy Sergio Gor Meets Modi, Discusses Trade, Defence and Technology Cooperation

WASHINGTON — U.S. Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, marking their first official meeting to address a range of bilateral priorities including trade, defence collaboration, and technology partnerships. Gor, who was confirmed last week by the U.S. Senate as Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, emphasized the growing importance of critical minerals to both countries. “President Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a great and personal friend,” Gor said during his first public address at the U.S. Embassy in Delhi on October 12.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the American envoy, saying on X that he was “glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor” and expressed confidence that his tenure would strengthen the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Gor’s visit, which runs from October 9 to October 14, includes meetings with key Indian officials such as Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The meeting took place amid ongoing trade tensions following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on most Indian exports, a rate among the highest faced by any U.S. trading partner. The move affects roughly $50 billion worth of goods, particularly labour-intensive sectors like textiles, gems and jewellery, and seafood exports.

The increase from 25% to 50% tariffs was reportedly a response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil. Gor also referenced the “incredible” phone conversation between Trump and Modi that took place before his departure for India, describing it as a reaffirmation of both nations’ intent to deepen cooperation. Modi confirmed that the two leaders had “reviewed good progress achieved in trade negotiations” and agreed to maintain close contact in the weeks ahead. While Gor has yet to formally assume office, his visit signals renewed diplomatic engagement and efforts to navigate the shifting dynamics of U.S.–India trade and strategic relations.
