SEOUL – South Korea’s presidential security adviser, Mr Wi Sung-lac, will visit Washington from July 6 to 8 for high-level meetings, his office announced on July 5. Mr Wi, who serves as national security adviser to President Lee Jae-myung, is expected to hold “in-depth discussions about all the pending issues between South Korea and the United States,” according to an official statement.
The visit comes at a critical time as Seoul may seek an extension of a freeze on US tariffs that is set to expire within days. South Korea’s Trade Minister, Mr Yeo Han-koo, also travelled to Washington on July 4 to hold talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and other senior American officials.
In addition to trade matters, Mr Wi is anticipated to explore the possibility of arranging a summit between President Lee and US President Donald Trump. President Lee took office in June and is seeking to strengthen bilateral ties amid regional security challenges and shifting global trade dynamics.
