Malaysia Reports First Covid-19 Fatality of 2025 Amid Rise in Weekly Infections

PETALING JAYA – Malaysia has confirmed its first Covid-19-related death of 2025, according to a statement by the Health Ministry on June 19. The fatality occurred during Epidemiological Week 24 (June 8–15) and involved a patient with underlying heart disease and diabetes who had not received a second booster dose.

The ministry highlighted that this marks a significant decline from the 57 Covid-19 deaths recorded in 2024, noting that the previous virus-related fatality was reported on May 26 last year. “This reflects the effectiveness of ongoing control measures,” the statement read.

During the same period, six Covid-19 patients were admitted to intensive care units, all with existing health conditions. All individuals have since been discharged from ICU, with four returning home and two transferred to general wards for continued treatment.

As of now, Malaysia has recorded a cumulative total of 21,738 Covid-19 cases. However, Week 24 saw a 68% spike in new infections, with 3,379 cases compared to 2,011 in the previous week. Despite the rise, the Health Ministry maintained that the situation remains under control.
