Bolsonaro Expects Hospital Discharge, Plans to Join Amnesty Rally

BRASILIA — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced he expects to be discharged from hospital on Sunday following abdominal surgery and plans to attend a May 7 rally advocating for amnesty for supporters convicted over the January 2023 riots.

The 70-year-old far-right leader was hospitalized three weeks ago due to complications from a 2018 stabbing and underwent his sixth surgery to treat an intestinal obstruction. His medical team had previously said he would be released “in the coming days.”

Bolsonaro’s planned participation in the “Peaceful March for Humanitarian Amnesty” comes as he faces legal challenges, including a Supreme Court ruling that he stand trial for allegedly plotting to overturn his 2022 election defeat to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He denies all allegations.
