Malaysia Drops Equity Rule for Private Education Institutions

PETALING JAYA — Malaysia’s Education Ministry has removed the requirement for certain private education institutions to maintain at least 30 per cent bumiputera equity ownership.

The policy change applies to private limited companies operating private education institutions under the ministry. Bumiputera refers mainly to Malays and other indigenous communities in Malaysia.

The ministry said the decision followed discussions with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry. It said the move was intended to align ownership regulations with the education sector’s current needs and keep participation open to all parties contributing to Malaysia’s development.

The Education Ministry added that it valued the contributions of private education operators and would continue working with them in the interests of Malaysian students.
