US envoy warns West Bank settlers over Palestinian American property

JERUSALEM — US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee warned militant Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank against taking property owned by Palestinian Americans, saying such conduct violates “God’s law” and could trigger US sanctions.

Huckabee made the remarks in response to a siege of homes in the West Bank village of Qusra, including one belonging to Palestinian American Loui Ridi. He said people should not take what does not belong to them, adding that the behavior would be a violation not only of civil law but also of scripture.

The ambassador said the US is appalled by the incident and that settlers involved should face significant consequences in Israel. He also said they could be subject to US penalties, including a ban on entry to the United States, although he said he was not aware of any sanctions currently under consideration.

Israeli forces have since pushed the settlers back from the homes, but residents say they still fear renewed encroachment once troops leave. Israel has not announced arrests or charges in connection with the episode.
