Carroll collects $5.63 million from Trump after post‑verdict fight

NEW YORK — Writer E. Jean Carroll has received nearly $5.63 million from former President Donald Trump after a court-supervised disbursement was approved, court records show.

The funds, the original $5 million civil verdict plus accrued interest were released to Carroll’s law firm on Monday, five days after U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan authorized the payment over objections from Trump’s lawyers. It marks the first time Trump has been required to pay Carroll following the 2023 jury finding that he was liable for sexually abusing and defaming her.

Carroll has secured a total of $88.3 million in civil judgments against Trump over seven years related to accusations she first raised about an alleged assault in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid‑1990s. Trump has repeatedly denied the allegations, calling them a hoax and framing the cases as politically motivated. The U.S. Supreme Court last month declined to hear an appeal of the $5 million verdict.

Trump’s legal team had asked an appeals court to block the disbursement, warning of “irreparable harm” if Carroll transferred the funds to third parties or gave them away. They argued her stated plan to place the money in an interest‑bearing account for retirement did not prevent potential dissipation. Carroll nonetheless received the payment after Judge Kaplan cleared the release.

Separately, a 2024 jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million based on her earlier allegations; that verdict is expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court. Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan said the firm was “pleased to report” the damages award has now been paid following the unanimous 2023 jury finding.
