Russia Offers Support to Mozambique Against Islamist Insurgents

MOSCOW — Russia said on Thursday it stands ready to assist Mozambique in tackling an ongoing “terrorist threat” in the country’s north, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told state news agency TASS.

Lavrov said Moscow would respond if Maputo formally requests support to counter Islamist insurgents who have been fighting government forces in northern Mozambique. The announcement comes as Russia expands its security footprint in Africa through the Africa Corps, a paramilitary force that succeeded the Wagner group and is operating in several countries on the continent.
