EVIAN-LES-BAINS, FRANCE — Kenya’s football-obsessed President William Ruto, an Arsenal supporter, said he has invited the Premier League champions to visit Kenya after thousands of fans filled Nairobi to celebrate the club’s first title in more than two decades.
Arsenal clinched the championship at the end of May, ending a 22-year wait and triggering jubilant street celebrations in the Kenyan capital. Speaking to Reuters at the G7 summit, Ruto described the scenes as “a huge celebration” and said he hoped Arsenal could travel to Kenya “sometime next year.”
Thousands of fans paraded through Nairobi in the club’s red and white, waving flags as Arsenal held off rivals including Manchester City. “I have sent an invitation because I think it would be a great moment for Arsenal to come to Kenya. They have great fans,” Ruto said.
