EVIAN, FRANCE — Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met on the sidelines of the G7 summit on June 16 and agreed to accelerate ties across trade, defence and technology, underscoring progress since Carney’s visit to India in March.
The leaders said they would deepen economic cooperation, noting advances on commercial arrangements for LNG, LPG and metallurgical coal, and expressed hope of concluding Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations in 2026. They welcomed recent high level exchanges, including India’s commerce minister visiting Canada and a planned Canadian trade mission to Indi, and announced the Raisina Americas platform to boost dialogue and cooperation.
Modi and Carney committed to strengthen institutional links, citing recent Joint Science and Technology Committee and Consular Dialogue meetings and planned talks on defence, finance and migration. They agreed to launch negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA) to underpin deeper defence and security cooperation and praised growing exchanges between defence institutions.
Both leaders highlighted collaboration under the Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy to expand skills, innovation partnerships and educational ties. Modi also backed Canada’s bid to become a Dialogue Partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association and accepted an invitation to visit Canada later in 2026, with dates to be set through diplomatic channels.
