UK, EU to Hold Second Summit on July 22 as Starmer Seeks Reset

LONDON — Britain and the European Union will meet for a second summit on July 22 as Prime Minister Keir Starmer moves to reset relations and deepen cooperation on trade, security and the economy, Starmer said on Tuesday.

Posting on X, Starmer said his government is “delivering on our promise to reset our relationship and put Britain at the heart of Europe,” adding that the two sides will work together to tackle the cost of living, boost jobs and create opportunities for young people.

Under pressure at home, Starmer has framed closer ties with the EU as central to his plan for economic growth and relief for households. He has urged a “big leap” forward in engagement at this year’s summit, aiming to advance cooperation on trade, defence and security while pressing for progress on specific issues such as steel tariffs, food standards and energy.

A Downing Street spokesperson said a meeting between Starmer and European Council President Antonio Costa at the G7 in France underlined both leaders’ view that a closer U.K.–EU relationship is essential for European security, resilience and prosperity.
