SEOUL — President Lee Jae‑myung has nominated Han Seong‑sook, current minister for SMEs and start‑ups, to serve as prime minister, the presidential office announced on June 7.
If Parliament confirms her, Han would become South Korea’s first woman to hold the post in two decades. A former chief executive at internet giant Naver, Han is expected to shepherd the government’s push into artificial intelligence and help translate strong export and semiconductor‑led growth into broader gains for small and medium‑sized enterprises, presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon‑sik said.
Under South Korea’s presidential system, the prime minister’s duties are largely ceremonial and administrative. Parliament must still approve the nomination.
