KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s prime minister urged voters to reject divisive, race-based politics ahead of the Johor state election, saying people want leaders focused on jobs, housing, education and a secure future.
In a June 7 Facebook post, Anwar Ibrahim said the launch of Pakatan Harapan’s election machinery in Batu Pahat had reinforced his confidence, noting Malays, Chinese and Indians united around building a “fairer, progressive and dignified” state. He called on voters to “reject divisive politics” and back leadership that promotes unity, protects public interests and offers hope.
Anwar thanked the large turnout at the short-notice event and said it signalled public appetite for a “mature, clean and future-oriented” political landscape. He highlighted Johor’s investment opportunities and said the Madani government’s development efforts must translate into direct benefits for citizens, with public funds managed with integrity.
“Integrity is non-negotiable,” he said, adding that while not all problems can be fixed within the government’s 3½ years in office, corruption and abuse of power cannot continue. The Johor state assembly was dissolved on June 1, triggering an election within 60 days; neighbouring Negeri Sembilan’s assembly was dissolved on June 5.
