Russia Warns Deployment of U.S. Missile Systems in Japan Would Threaten Far East Security

MOSCOW — Russia’s foreign ministry on Thursday warned that the deployment of U.S. Typhon missile systems on Japanese soil for military exercises would pose a direct threat to the security of Russia’s eastern borders.

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow had repeatedly raised concerns with Tokyo about any placement of missiles in Japan, arguing such moves would have “a serious negative impact on the stability and security of the Asia‑Pacific region” and specifically endanger Russia’s Far Eastern frontiers.

Zakharova added that Russia would view such a decision as deliberate and hostile, saying officials had regularly cautioned Japan against actions they believe ignore Moscow’s national interests.
