MOSCOW – Russia announced a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine on May 4 for May 8-9, coinciding with its World War II Victory Day observances, while warning of a “massive missile strike” on Kyiv’s center should Ukraine disrupt the celebrations.
The Russian Defense Ministry, acting on President Vladimir Putin’s directive, posted on state messaging app MAX that it hopes Kyiv reciprocates during the 81st anniversary of the Great Patriotic War. Putin initially floated the truce last week during a call with US President Donald Trump, prompting Ukraine to seek clarification via Washington.
Moscow urged Kyiv civilians and foreign diplomats to evacuate the capital preemptively if violations occur, framing any Ukrainian action as a “criminal plan” against the historic commemoration. Ukraine has not yet formally responded to the limited two-day pause amid ongoing hostilities.
