Mexico Vows Stronger Protests After 14th Immigrant Death in US Custody

MEXICO CITY — President Claudia Sheinbaum announced “protest actions” on March 30 following the death of another Mexican immigrant in U.S. custody over the weekend, marking the 14th such fatality under President Donald Trump’s second term.

“We are going to take several protest actions over yet another death of a Mexican, a fellow citizen, in the United States,” Sheinbaum declared at a news conference, signaling a shift from past responses limited to diplomatic notes.

Mexico’s foreign ministry reports 14 Mexicans have died in U.S. custody or during immigration raids since Trump returned to the White House. This latest incident involved a detainee at the Adelanto detention center in California, who was transferred to a Victorville hospital before succumbing on March 27.

Sheinbaum promised escalated measures, with details to be unveiled later that day at a press conference in Los Angeles, the state where the death occurred. The announcement heightens bilateral tensions, as Mexico demands accountability amid rising migrant fatalities and stricter U.S. border enforcement.
