Greece Eyes April Deal for Italian Bergamini Frigates to Bolster Navy

ATHENS — Greece aims to finalize negotiations and ink a deal by April for two Bergamini-class frigates from Italy, with an option for two more, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias announced in a Sunday interview. The move builds on last year’s naval cooperation memorandums between high-ranking Greek and Italian officials, paving the way for Athens to acquire the advanced FREMM vessels.

Dendias emphasized efforts to integrate the new-generation ELSA missile onto the frigates, enhancing their capabilities amid regional tensions. This acquisition forms part of Greece’s ambitious 28 billion euro multi-year defense plan, which also encompasses a fourth Belharra frigate from France and additional submarines.

The procurement underscores Athens’ push to modernize its navy and maintain parity with historic rival Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean.
