18 workers killed after truck collides into the bus: India

Eighteen migrant laborers were killed when a truck crashed into their car on a highway in northern India after their bus broke down, authorities reported on Wednesday (July 28).
According to a top police officer in Uttar Pradesh, at least 19 others were hurt in the collision. The majority of the passengers were going home to Bihar in eastern India after working in Punjab or Haryana. After the bus’s axle shaft broke, the passengers got off and were resting next to it when a vehicle drove into it from behind. Some of the remains were recovered from beneath the crumpled double-decker bus by rescue personnel.
“The district administration and police have begun an investigation, and we are ensuring that the injured receive the finest medical treatment possible,” police officer Satya Narayan Sabat said. The massive network of roadways in India is infamously hazardous and poorly maintained.
According to the government, over 150,000 people are killed in road accidents in India each year.
Among the main factors contributing to the high number of fatalities are excessive speeding and people not using seat belts or wearing crash helmets.
